text: Jul. 12. San Germano. Pope Innocent III informs the patriarch of Jerusalem that he has heard with sadness that the patriarch of Antioch has died while imprisoned by the count of Tripoli. He orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to assist the church of Antioch and, representing the pope, to absolve any canons of Antioch from excommunication, to assist in their canonical election of a new patriarch, to resolve the issue of a new dean and to impose the excommunication of the count of Tripoli strictly until he makes satisfaction.

Pope Innocent III informs the patriarch of Jerusalem and the magistri of the Knights Templar and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem that Joh[ann]es de Sambuco frater Ierosolimitani Hospitalis Sancti Basilii is bringing out on the pope’s behalf 1206 and a half oboles, 9 skifati, 7 marabuttini and 80 unciae in Roman weight of skifati and broken gold pieces, the whole totalling 850 librae Provenienses. The master and brothers of the [Templar house on the] Aventine are despatching an emissary with an equivalent amount of much money. Innocent records that he entrusted 1000 auri librae Proveniensis to be carried by the Knights Templar last year, but has not had any acknowledgement. And he plans to send by means of the Hospitallers of St John and the Knights Templar a further 1400 marcae argenti to be spent as the patriarch and Joh[ann]es Brenensis comes advise. He wishes to provide the patriarch of Antioch with money for his use.

He knows that in letters to Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem they have accepted the translation of the bishop of Ivrea to the patriarchate of Antioch. text: Jun. 4. Viterbo. Pope Innocent III writes to King Leon of Cilician Armenia, deploring the dispute between Leon, his nephew and the count of Tripoli and the resulting danger to Antioch. He has received letters from Leon and his emissaries, the archbishop-elect of Tarsus and a brother of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, but complains of Leon’s obduracy in submitting to judgement on the matter and his use of force. Innocent has asked the count of Tripoli to surrender the citadel of Antioch to Patriarch Peter of Antioch, whom the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem have promised to assist. Innocent exhorts Leon to observe a truce with the count of Tripoli and to return the castle of Gaston, which Leon holds unjustly, to the Knights Templar.

They had been doing so on the assumption that this was intended when it was established at their foundation that they were to follow Templar military practices. The Templars have complained. Innocent has written to the patriarch of Jerusalem on the matter.

text: May 18. Lateran. Pope Innocent III reminds the papal legate, the patriarch of Jerusalem, that he had already ordered him to judge in the dispute between the king of Cilician Armenia and the Knights Templar over the castle of Gaston and other issues. The Templars were prepared to submit to judgement, but the king had refused to accept their approach and had occupied by force their property in portus Bonellus and in other places in Armenia, which provided them with much of their sustenance, installing guards [custodes] in their houses. The patriarch had ordered the king to withdraw his guards and had excommunicated him, warning the inhabitants of, and pilgrims to, the Latin East to do nothing to assist him. The king then seized all the Templar possessions in Cilician Armenia, except for 2 castles which he could not occupy, and destroyed Templar casalia in the principality of Antioch to deprive their castles of provisions. Knights Templar and their companions had been wounded and killed. Innocent is writing to the patriarch of Antioch, the archbishop of Tyre and the bishops of Sidon, Tripoli, Tortosa [Anteradensis], Limassol and Famagusta, and King John of Jerusalem, confirming the excommunication of the king of Cilician Armenia and ordering them to publicize it.
