text: Jun 19. Lateran. At the request of the abbot and monks of the abbey of St Mary of the Latins in Jerusalem, which was a hospice serving Latins [Latini], Italians and Lombards when Jerusalem was occupied by the Muslims [Sarracenorum Turcorumque temporibus], Pope Paschal II takes them under papal protection. He confirms their Cassinese Benedictine customs and their use of Roman psalmody. He forbids anyone to enter the abbey without the monks’ licence, other than the patriarch of Jerusalem. The abbot’s election will be according to the Benedictine Rule and no Italian is to be forced on the community. The ordination of an abbot is to be the prerogative of the patriarch of Jerusalem if the elect finds travelling to Rome for consecration difficult. No tithes are to be owed on harvests produced by the monks’ own labour or on oblations or revenues granted to the community. The abbey’s cemetery, and the cemeteries attached to its dependent churches, are to be available to those who wish burial, provided they are not excommunicates. Paschal confirms the abbey in its churches and possessions. The abbots may enjoy privileges granted by them by the churches of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Papal protection of St Mary has been recognized by the patriarch of Jerusalem.

Pope Paschal II confirms for Hvgo abbas and the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat all the gifts made by Godfrey [dux] and Baldwin [Ierosolimitanus rex] and others, and whatever the abbey will receive through the concessions of pontiffs, the liberality of princes and the oblations of the faithful. text: Jul. 19. Priverno. Pope Paschal II informs the king, churchmen and laity in the kingdom of Jerusalem of his reaction to accusations that Patriarch Arnulf was of illegitimate birth, had had relations with women and had been forced on the church of Jerusalem by the king. The leader of the party of accusers was Archbishop Evremar of Caesarea, using as witnesses two women, one being the wife of Girardus and the other said to be a Muslim [Sarracena]. Paschal had despatched a legate to the East and Arnulf and many of his brother bishops had been summoned to Italy. Many letters in support of Arnulf were sent to Rome, stating that he had already been given a papal dispensation, and there were protests at the one-sided decision of the papal legates. Aschetillus episcopus Bethlehem, Hugo abbas monasteruii de Valle Iosaphat, Arnaldus prior ecclesie de Monte Syon, and Petrus and Guillelmus canonici ecclesie dominici Sepulcri swear that they elected Arnulf to the patriarchate without fear of royal violence. Arnulf swears that he is innocent of any criminal charges. Pope Paschal restores Arnulf to the patriarchate.
