text: Jan. 18. Lateran. Pope Innocent III replies to the patriarch of Alexandria, who has written concerning the Christian captives held in Alexandria and Cairo [Babylonia] and has asked for assistance from the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers of St John, kings and princes. He has ordered the patriarch of Jerusalem to work for an exchange and to give him advice. The patriarch of Alexandria has informed the pope that the captives have only one old priest to minister to them and that they have asked him to ordain one of themselves as deacon. Innocent supports their request and authorizes this procedure.
