He confirms the Hospitallers in their possession of the casale, which they had been given by King Baldwin and which their rustici may continue to cultivate in the accustomed manner. The charter, which is dated in the pontificate of Franco Tulippis archipresul and Prince Raymond of Antioch, is drawn up by Radulfus Carnotensis cancellarius comitis. Raymond II, Poncii comitis filius, Dei gratia comes Tripolis, records that he has become a confrater of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, to which he makes a sealed eleemosynary grant. He gives the Hospital Raphania and Mons Ferrandus with all feudal rights [feodales], with liege lordship [dominatio et ligietas] over all men, knights and burgesses [burgenses], having property there, together with full rights of lordship over Mardabech and in the fisheries [piscaria] of Chamele from Chades to Resclausa. He also gives full lordship over Cratum, castellum Bochee, Felitum and Lacum. He makes the gift of Cratum with the agreement of Willelmus de Crato, his wife Adelasia and son Bertrandus Hugo, to whom he has given in exchange, in the presence of all his curia, the Cavea Davidis Siri with the full powers of a Ra’is in the mountain district [cum omni raisagio montanee] [53] and the feodum of Pons Willelmus, consisting of 2 knights’ fiefs [caballariae] of land and 600 besants, provided by himself, his barones and the bishop of Tripoli, who have each given 200 besants. In addition Willelmus de Crato will be able to draw 7 besants year for 10 years, starting this August, from each knight’s fee [caballaria] in the mountain district. Raymond bought Felicium and Lacum from Gislebertus de Podio Laurentii and his wife Dagolth for 1,000 besants. With the agreement of his mother Cecilia comitissa, his wife Hodierna, his son Raimundus and his brother Philippus, Raymond adds that in military engagements booty will only be shared with him when he is present. He allows the Suriani of Cratum exemption from taxation [jura et consuetudines] on all they buy and sell throughout his county. text: Feb. 1. Raymond [of Poitiers], Dei gratia Antiochenus princeps, with the agreement of his wife Constancia, only daughter of Prince Bohemond II, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. He confirms all that Bohemond II, his wife’s father, and Tancred and other princes and barones of Antioch gave in alms to the Order. He refers especially to a boat [grippus] on the Lake [of Antioch] with that freedom [of use] that Adam de Guirchia castellanus and his other barones possessed, and to the house built in Antioch by Barutellus and his wife Sarracena, which was to pass to the Order after the death of Barutellus. Raymond confirms gifts that would be made of casalia and gastinae, and all to be given in alms, provided that the fiefs of knights [feodum militis] are not diminished so that the curia loses servicium. He lists in Antioch: a house with a garden next to it near the church of St John Chrysostom; a cavuta in the vicus of the Amalfitans; and a little house [domumcula] in the vicus of St Paul; outside Antioch, the casalia of Assis, Ursan and Melessin given by Bohemond [of Taranto]; the casale of Balilas in the territory of Harenc; the casale of Churar in the territory of Aronia; the casale of Cizenburg in the territory of Turbassellum; before Tilium the gastina of Aganir and the casalia of Gadir and Ubre; the casale of Sarata in the territory of Mamistra; the casale of Muserac in the territory of Cafardam. text: Jan. 1 – Aug. 31. Melisende, dei gratia Ierosolimorum regina, with the agreement of her son Baldwin rex Jerusalem, records that she has made a sealed eleemosynary grant, exchanging property with Raimundus Hospitalis pauperum Christi provisor. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem has made over to her a bath house in the vicus of St Leonard in Acre. In return Melisende has given a logia before the doors of the basilica of St John the Baptist and houses that had belonged to Franco castellanus Acconensis, which Melisende had claimed and had reverted to the crown. Melisende also adds to the exchange land [terra] on the right side of the road that runs from Acre to Casale Album, belonging to the camerarius. The other three sides of the land are bounded by Casale Album, Disderum and the property of Suriani. Melisende, together with King Baldwin, confirms under seal a purchase made on behalf of the Hospital by the aforesaid Raimundus, tutor pauperum, of a house with a tower adjacent to it, which had belonged to Robertus vicecomes Acconensis. The purchase was legitimately made in the presence of Clarembaldus vicecomes Acconensis, with the agreement of Agnes, the wife of Robertus and the mother of Clarembaldus. Melisende confirms a purchase made by the aforesaid Frater Raimundus for the use of the poor and the hospital [xenodochium] of a casale called Assera from Johannes domnus de Bethsan, although Johannes has retained the rustici. text: May 24. Rotbertus de casali S. Egidii and his wife Odula state that, with the agreement of Rohardus and his wife domina Gilla, from whom they held the feudum, and with the confirmation of King Fulk, Queen Melisende and Patriarch William, they had leased the land [of Emaus] to Raimundus magister and the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, on condition that Raimundus and the Hospitallers gave them 500 besants a year, half payable at Easter and half on the Feast of All Saints, as recorded in charters issued by the king of Jerusalem and the patriarch. But now, in changed circumstances, Raimundus magister and the brothers of his chapter have agreed to a modification of terms requested by Rotbertus and Odula. The rent will in future by paid annually in 3 instalments: 200 besants at Easter, 100 on the Feast of St John the Baptist, 100 on the Feast of All Saints and 100 at Christmas. If the rent is not forthcoming for 40 days Robert and Odula can reoccupy the land until the rent is paid. Their lord Rohardus and his wife Gilla agree as an eleemosynary grant that up to 100 besants can be sold to, exchanged with or given to the Hospital. Should the family of Rotbertus fail and the feudum revert to its lord, the Hospital will be bound solely to pay a rent of 400 besants a year. Raimundus also accepts houses in burgo, given in alms by Count Raymond of Tripoli, together with a casale called Cendina, which is across the river, and a vineyard which had belonged to Hassennus Riserius. He also acquired the houses in castello left to the Hospital by Rigaudus, who has died.
