text: Feb. 8. Mont Pèlerin. Pons, gratia Dei comes Tripolis, and his wife Cecilia, the daughter of the king of France, with the agreement of their son Raymond, make an eleemosynary grant to the hospital of the poor [hospitale pauperum] on Mont Pèlerin belonging to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Confirming everything it possesses in the county, they refer specifically to the following villae which Raymond I and Pons’s father Bertrand had given: Misdelia, just as Bertrandus prior had it on the day the church of St John in the hospital [hospitale] on Mont Pèlerin was dedicated, the territory of which is limited by the river that runs to Mont Pèlerin, and the boundaries of the villae of Ardacium, Alma, Bethsama, Bethsedion and Ceraphtenie, which belongs to the church of Bethlehem; Bahani; Cornonium; Coliath; Aroath; Cendiana; Apia; Villa Sicca; Durcarbe; Baho, which is situated ad motam de Bochea; Theledehep and Cartamare in the territory of Rafania; the besants that Count William had levied on the cattle [bubus] of the Suriani working in the villae; lands beyond the bridge at Mont Pèlerin given by Raymond I and Bertrand, together with a vineyard which is next to the cemetery of the church of St John; a magnificent house [domum obtimam] by the sea in the port of Tripoli; a field [campus] just outside [ante] the city of Tripoli; freedom from teloneum in the port of Tripoli and in the platea, so that the men of the Hospital can buy and sell without exaction, a privilege confirmed by Bernardus Tripolitanus episcopus, with the consent of Garsio cantor and all his chapter. Pons gives the Hospital some mansiones, a garden, an oven and a vineyard at Archae; a mansio at Felicium; 2 mansiones and a vineyard at Cratum. He confirms everything given to the Hospital at Tortosa or in its territory or in the castle [castrum] called Kamel, or elsewhere, together with mills at Kamel; the villae, lands and houses, mills, oven and bath house given by Raymond I and Bertrand in the city of Rafania and its territory, so that a hospital for the poor [hospicium pauperum], which was held by Galterius, could be built there. Pons gives permission to all men who hold lands of him to give the Hospital 1 villanus each. He adds a vineyard at Kafaracha, from which 100 jarrae of wine can be produced. He confirms the gifts made by his barones at the time the church of St John the Baptist on Mont Pèlerin was consecrated, with the agreement of Bernardus Tripolitanus episcopus, Geraldus Rafaniensis episcopus and Raimundus Tortosanus episcopus. Count Pons of Tripoli then handed the charter to dominus Raymundus, prior Hospitalis Iherosolimitani.

He confirms donations made by Bohemond [of Taranto], Tancred and other princes and barones of Antioch. They include a house with a garden next to it, which is situated close by the church of St John Chrysostom in Antioch; a canuta in the vicus of the Amalfitans in Antioch; a domuncula with a garden in the vicus of St Paul in Antioch. He confirms the gift by Bohemond I of three casalia outside Antioch: Assis; Ursan; and Melessin. He also confirms the gifts of Casale Balilas in the territory of Harenc; Casale Churar in the territory of Aronia; Casale Cizemburc in the territory of Turbassella; a gastina before Tilium called Aganir; Casale Cadir; Casale Nubeirac; Casale Sarare in the land of Mamistra; Casale Muserac in the territory of Cafardan. Bohemond [II] also gives the Hospital of St John the freedom to enter and leave his dominions without paying consuetudines or any exactio curiae. The casale is surrounded by the casalia of Artha, Fardasie, Aldie, Kalodie, Arthaba, Beselechie and Burin. The gift is confirmed as an eleemosynary grant by Johannes de Bethzan and Hugo de Bethzan, the brothers of his deceased wife Euphemia, from whom he held the casale. The gift is also confirmed as an eleemosynary grant sealed by Domnus Galterius Cesariensis, in whose lordship [dominium et territorium] the casale is situated. The casale is handed over to Master Raymond of the Hospital, in the presence of King Baldwin II and his army, who are ravaging the territory of Ascalon.

text: Mar. 1 – Sept. 23. Jerusalem. In the royal palatium. Baldwin, dei gratia rex Ierusalem Latinorum secundus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. He confirms under his seal everything given in the reigns of his predecessors to the Hospital. He confirms those gifts made during his reign, specifying the following. In the territory of Jerusalem, Gosfridus de Parentea gave 4 partes terre at a place called Beccafaba. Gosfridus also gave a garden with cisterns next to the Tower of David, with roads on either side, one of which runs to Bethlehem. Adam de Ramis gave a house with a cistern inside, situated in front of the house of Guido de Miliaco and next to the Gate of the Temple, from where the road goes to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. Witnesses of Adam’s gift were: Aschetinus vicecomes; Vgo de Ramis; Gosfridus de Acula; Alfanus; Siherius de Beritto; Porcellus; Rancoldus de Ponzo. Alanus Boccerius gave a house in Jerusalem, before the witnesses: Aschetinus vicecomes; Guerricus; Hanricus Burgundio. Bernardus de Tolosia and his wife Rufa gave a house in Jerusalem situated before the church of St Martin. Alfanus gave himself and all his property and houses in the piazza of the money-changers [platea nummulariorum] in the presence of the witnesses: Paganus Cesariensis electus, olim cancellarius tantum; Vgo comes Trescensis; Gosfridus de Parentea; Aschetinus vicecomes; Rodulfus camerarius; Rainaldus de Ponzo; Gosfridus Acula; Siherius de Beritto; Porcellus. In the territory of Acre, Barda Armenus and his wife, with the agreement of their children, gave their casale called Coketum. In the territory of Acre, Airaldus cognomine Barba gave half of a casale called Iebethza and Aldeburgis, the sister of Lambertus cambiator, gave the other half. In the territory of Caesarea Gosfridus de Flaiaco, together with Johannes de Bethsam and his brother Vgo de Bethsam gave a casale called Calansue. In the territory of Lydda Vgo de Rammis gave 2 casalia called Bethiben and Gendas in a grant confirmed by Vgo Ioppensis domnus. The charter was drawn up by Hemelinus vicecancellarius noster.

G[ualterius] cognomento Granerius Cesaree et Sydonie Dei gratia dominus, together with his wife Juliana and with the consent of his barones, makes an eleemosynary grant to the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. He confirms all the gifts and eleemosynary grants made by his father Eustachius, who gave: houses in Caesarea with two curtiles and freedom from taxation on sales and purchases; a casale outside Caesarea called Aldefie; houses with curtiles in Cacho; curtiles given by G., the lord’s vicecomes, and Alo, for which the lord of Caesarea had made an exchange; 4 carrugae terrae ad serendum et garetandum at Cacho and 2 carrugae given by H. Lumbardus with the consent of Eustachius. Galterius has himself given 2 carrugae terrae ad serendum et garetandum in Cafarsalem and a further 2 from the land [a principio terre] of Rambaldus, which is worked in Marescum on the road to the river. If that land fails the Hospital will be given up to 4 carrugae terrae ad serendum et garetandum of the better land to be found in Sabulone. He also gives the Hospital Calumzum. He gives the Hospital a house in Jerusalem which he had been given to him by King Baldwin I. The house is to be held with full rights, except that Balduinus can lodge in it when he comes to Jerusalem. It is situated between the Hospital’s oven and mill. In return Balduinus is given by Rogerius Paganus, frater noster, a house in Beirut. The exchange is made in the presence of Balduinus. He gives the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by Ramundus Hospitalis servus et rector, his palacium in the devastated city of Latakia. This palace was given to him by King Baldwin II of Jerusalem, Alice’s father, and his ownership of it was confirmed by Bohemond II, the son of Bohemond the Great. At the orders of Princess Alice this gift is recorded in a charter by Robertus cancellarius domine principisse and sealed with the seal of the prince.
