text: Feb. 15. Benevento. Pope Alexander III writes to P. prior sancti Sepulcri and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre. He has received P. and G. their brothers. P. will be returning to explain orally what the pope will have written to others. Alexander has particularly ordered the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem not to refuse to pay tithes belonging to the Holy Sepulchre on lands in the diocese of Jerusalem they do not cultivate themselves or cultivate at their expense. They should also pay tithes on lands they do cultivate according to the terms agreed with the Holy Sepulchre. The Hospitallers are forbidden to build a new church in Jaffa without the consent of the patriarch and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, especially as they already have a church there. Nor should they ignore any interdict that might be laid on the city of Jaffa.

text: Aug. 5. [114] Benevento. Pope Alexander III writes to P. prior and the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, who have complained that Patriarch Amalric of Jerusalem and King Amalric are intending to withdraw the church of Jaffa from subjection to the Holy Sepulchre and to raise it to the status of a bishopric. The pope reports that he has written to the patriarch ordering him, with the advice of the king and others, to recompense the canons of the Holy Sepulchre if the plan proceeds.

After praising the Cluniac congregation, he describes how Theobaldus, the prior of St-Arnoul-de-Crépy-en-Valois, proposed to King Amalric the establishment of a Cluniac house in his kingdom. King Amalric agreed to the request. The pope wishes the abbey of Cluny to be given the destitute monasterium of Palmareia, irrespective of whether it is subject to papal provision or to the authority of the bishop of Tiberias.

text: Before Dec. 8 1170 or 1171. Letters from the archdiocese of Nazareth have reached Pope Alexander III, who writes to all the faithful in the kingdom of France. The pope describes the miserable state of the Latin East, ravaged by earthquakes and by invasion by the enemies of Christ. He draws special attention to the occupation by them of a great and well populated casale belonging to the church of Nazareth, the captivity of clergy and other inhabitants, and the resulting poverty of the canons. Without assistance they will not be able to fulfil their duties in their church. He asks that the canons and their representatives [nuntii] be received well and given assistance.

text: 1178 - 1180. [169] Pope Alexander III writes to Rogerius magister of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. Reiterating a papal warning to observe the traditions and customs of Raimundus [Raymond of Puy], he reminds the master that the Hospitallers should abstain from bearing arms, according to the custom established by Raymond, except when the Relic of the True Cross is brought on campaign for the defence of the kingdom or for the siege of some pagan city, and then only if it is clear that armed assistance is necessary. The Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was instituted for the reception and refection of the poor, who are better defended by love and mercy than by force of arms. The pope is concerned lest the care of the poor be diminished, because of the expense of obtaining arms.
