Raimundus] in hospitio sancti Johannis dictus magister imo humilis minister writes a general letter to the Christian faithful, commending its bearer, who has been gravely wounded in the fighting that surrounded the Battle of Mont Gisard. Rogerius describes the participation of Flandrie comes Philippus in the siege of the castle called Hermgen, Saladin’s investment of castrum beati Georgii with an army of 75000 and the resulting victory [at Mont Gisard] by a Christian army of 3000, who were aided by the presence of the relic of the True Cross, carried by the bishop of Bethlehem. Rogerius puts the Christian dead at 1100 men and the wounded at 750. The injured were admitted to the Hospital of St John in Jerusalem, which already contained 900 patients. The Sarraceni lost 30000 killed and 15000 made captive. He begs assistance for the bearer, who was so badly wounded that he can no longer bear arms.

Rogerius, pauperum Christi servus et domus Hospitalis Jerusalem magister, together with his chapter, clerical and lay brothers, records under seal an agreement he has reached with dominus Guerricus Petracensis archiepiscopus at Cratum. In return for the tithes owed on all the Hospital’s properties in the diocese the Order will pay the archbishop 40 besants each year on the Feast of the Holy Cross in September. If it acquires properties in future, it will owe half tithes, with exemptions for animal fodder, vineyards and gardens in which the fruits are harvested at the Hospitallers own expense, although if it acquires vineyards and gardens from which the church of Petra was accustomed to receive tithes, it will pay half of these. In the general chapter of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Rogier/Rogerius serf des poures de Crist/servus pauperum Jhesu Christi promulgates statutes dealing with the duties of the conventual prior and local commanders, the provision of physicians, the treatment of male and female patients, the ward duties of the brothers and servants, and the provision of materials for the Hospital in Jerusalem by the European provinces and by officers in the Latin East. Of the latter, the bailli/baylivus of Antioch should send 2,000 canes/brachia of cotton for making bed coverlets, and the prior of Mont Pèlerin and the bailli/baylivus of Tiberias should each send 2 quintaus/quintalia of sugar for making lectuaries and medicines. An appendix, issued after frère/frater Rogier/Rogerius de Molinis maistre/magister and frater Bernardus prior had heard testimony, lists customary regulations for the treatment of patients, including children, for the duties of the frere corvoisier and the aumonier/elemosinarius, for prayers for benefactors and for alms-giving.

With the agreement of his chapter, Rogerius de Molinis sancte domus Hospitalis pauperum Christi minister leases under seal to Bisansonus the houses in Acre that Petrus Bertasia used to hold for the census of 29 besants, payable annually to the Hospital in Acre at Michaelmas. The houses are bounded by the house of Maria de Caypha, the house of the sons of the late Paganottus, the curia of Maria Bubala and the public way. Bisansonus will pay the rent of 29 besants on the same terms. He can sell, pledge or alienate the properties, except to knights [viri militares] and professed religious, but the Hospital will have preemption rights.
