text: Nov. 22. Margatum. In the camera of the episcopus Valloniensis. Bartholomeus Valloniensis ecclesie minister humilis records under seal that Pope Gregory IX has appointed him judge delegate in the case that has arisen between the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem and Bohemond, prince of Antioch and count of Tripoli, over Maraclea and other injuries. Bohemond did not answer several summons by the bishop to appear in Antioch, nor did he provide adequate response. On a further peremptory summons, he sent to Tortosa [apud Anterandum] as his representative M. thesaurarius Anteradensis, who was not sufficiently provided with letters and denied the bishop’s authority in this case. The prince renewed the appeal [to the Holy See] he had already made in the presence of the patriarch of Antioch. Since the magister and brothers of the Hospital were demanding action, the bishop took advice in Acre and travelled to Margatum where he waited until 22 November for the prince to answer the case. He then judged that the magister and brothers of the Hospital of St John, who were represented by the procurators magister Robertus de Alvernia clericus domini archiepiscopi Nicosiensis and Robertus Pisanus judex, filius quondam Maregnani cancellarii, be put in possession and into provisional lordship [quasi dominium] of the castle of Maraclea. He called on the procurators to appear before him at Margatum on 15 January next to describe the injuries suffered by the Hospital at the hands of the prince. Witnesses: Willelmus cantor Valloniensis; Willelmus Lombardus canonicus Valloniensis; Franco canonicus Valloniensis; presbiter Joannes bajulus et procurator ecclesie Valloniensis; presbiter Johannes de Laudicia; presbiter Petrus de Margato; Rainaldus miles; Beltramus miles; Symon turcopulus; frater Stephanus prior Margati; Giraudus diaconus; Raimundus diaconus Valloniensis; frater Raimundus de Mandago vicecastellanus; frater Bernardus Raimundi preceptor militum; frater Guillelmus de Cerveria; Gandulfus Boia; Petrus Saporitus notarius sacri imperii, who drew up this judgement. Signatory: Bartholomeus Valloniensis episcopus.
