Amalricus comes Ascalonitanus makes a sealed eleemosynary grant, confirming the gift made to the brother lepers of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, now under the rule of magister Hugo de Sancto Paulo, of the casale called Zaythar with 10 terre carruate by Philippus Neapolitanus, with the consent of his wife Ysabel, his mother domna Stephania, his son Rainerius, his daughters Helena and Stephania, and his brothers Gwido Francigena and Henricus Bubalus, in the presence of Baldwin rex Ierosolimorum, the brother of Amalricus, during the siege of Ascalon. Hugo dominus Hibelini records that his late uncle dominus Rainerius made an eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, giving land in the territory of Ramla. But the men [homines] who were entrusted with drawing the boundaries of the land measured out more than Rainerius had ordered. After a long time, Hugo was notified and, with the agreement of his wife Agnes comitissa and his brothers dominus Baldoinus and dominus Barisanus, and with the advice of Bernardus Liddensis episcopus, and also to benefit the vow he has made to pilgrimage to St James [of Compostela], he makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the brothers of St Lazarus, giving them the additional land, together with [the confirmation of a gift of] land made to them by domina Eva. text: Feb. 4. Jerusalem. Amalric, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex quintus, makes a sealed eleemosynary grant to the leprosary of St Lazarus of Jerusalem and its sick. He confirms a rent of 72 besants, taken from the royal revenues from David Gate and payable in 4 instalments of 18 besants each at Easter, the Nativity of St John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas. The rent is made up in the following way. The king has given 50 of these besants for the maintenance of one leper in perpetuity. Added to this is a rent of 10 besants, drawn from the money fief [assisia] attached to the pincernatus, which was given by Odo de Sancto Amando, and a rent of 12 besants was given by the king in exchange for a house next to the macellum in Jerusalem, which the brothers of St Lazarus surrendered to him.
