text: Dec. 25 1161 - Dec. 24 1162. Petrus Tyrensis archiepiscopus confirms an agreement made by him, when he was prior of the Holy Sepulchre, and G. abbas of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat. This ended a dispute over lands at Castrum Feniculi. On a date that had been agreed G. abbas with some of his monks and Petrus with some of his canons met on the site under the mediation of B. Cesariensis archiepiscopus, together with good and faithful men of Caesarea who knew the boundary divisions there. Men chosen from either side walked the bounds from the palm tree to the carob tree, from the carob tree to the sugar cane plantation, from the sugar cane plantation in a direct line to the river [a palmo usque ad carrobletum, a carrobleto usque ad cannetum, a canneto usque ad flumariam recta linea]. Petrus then conceded to St Mary the land, shaped like a tongue, beyond the sugar cane plantation [terram quę a canneto in ultra, quę quasi lingua est], so that the boundary line should be established from the sugar cane plantation across to the river [a canneto per transversum ad flumariam]. Witnesses: B. Cesariensis archiepiscopus; and of the boni viri, Manasses; Gervasius; Aeris de Area; Emelinus miles; Arnaldus Curta Capa; Georgius Herminius; Rainaldus Belgrant and many others.

initiator: Pope Innocent III
recipient: Patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate
institution: Templars
additional institution: Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem
text: Mar. 5. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem, the papal legate. He approves the election by the canons of the church of Antioch and the translation to the patriarchate of Antioch of the bishop of Ivrea that resulted from the patriarch of Jerusalem’s mediation. He wishes the patriarch of Jerusalem to confer on the new patriarch the insignia of his office as soon as possible and he expects the two patriarchs to work together in the interests of the Holy Land. Turning to the conflict between the king of Armenia, the Knights Templar and the count of Tripoli, he orders the patriarch of Jerusalem to work for reconciliation and to insist on the observance of truces, given the danger to the Holy Land, while persuading the king to restore the Templar properties. With the ending of the dispute between Duke Philip of Swabia and Otto [of Brunswick], who has gained the [western] empire, he hopes assistance will come. Meanwhile he is sending a large sum of money, to be spent on the needs of the Holy Land by the patriarch, the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John.

text: Aug. 1-31. Johan de Gibeleth, the son of the late Guillaume de Gibeleth, records under seal that he has reached agreement with the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, represented by frere Guillaume de Chasteauneuf maistre, over a dispute about the grinding [moiture] of his mill called the molin de la Mer, which the Order claimed he had given as an eleemosynary grant to its commandery [maison] in Tripoli. He confirms that the commandery [maison] in Tripoli can grind freely each week 100 marcibans of wheat, of the measure of the port of Tripoli, for the brothers, the sick and its household [mahnée], employing the first grindstone at the mill that it finds unused. If the full measure cannot be ground in one week, it can be made up the next, but should there be a failure through the fault of the brothers or their men, or because the mill breaks down, the amount cannot be recovered. Guarantors: Hue de Gibeleth; Johan de Farabel sire dou Pui; Hue de Balaiz; Johan Dedde.
