text: c. Dec.15-17. Lateran. Pope Innocent III writes to King Leon I of Cilician Armenia. He has heard an appeal for assistance from the magister of the Knights Templar [militia Templi] and emissaries of the patriarch and prince of Antioch, the count of Tripoli and the commune of Antioch. They had described how after the Sarraceni had abandoned the castle [castrum] called Gaston, which the Knights Templar had legitimately possessed, Armenian forces had entered and held Gaston. Leon had promised the patriarch, prince and commune to restore it to the Knights Templars but had delayed doing so. He had proposed to the Holy See that it be held by his uncle Milo. Innocent orders Leon to restore the castle to the Knights Templar. It will be up to the king to present his case for judgement by the pope himself or his legates, who are sailing on the next passage.

text: Dec. 15. Lateran. Pope Innocent III orders the patriarch of Jerusalem, the archbishop of Tyre and the bishop of Acre to release the Knights Templar from a sentence of excommunication improperly imposed on them by the bishop of Sidon. The bishop of Tiberias had complained that the magister and brothers of the militia Templi had held back 1300 besants and other goods of his diocese, which his predecessor had deposited with them. The pope had appointed the bishops of Sidon and Biblium as judge delegates in the case, but the Templars had sent some brothers to inform him that when they disembarked on a Wednesday at Tyre, having returned from the principality of Antioch where they had been involved in a war between the prince of Antioch and the [Muslim] lord of Aleppo, the bishop assigned the following day, the Thursday, for a hearing of the case. The magister could not attend but sent 2 brothers, who promised to respond to the complaint of the bishop of Tiberias and to observe any sentence delivered by the bishop of Sidon, even though the bishop of Biblium was absent. But the bishop of Sidon refused to hear any arguments and demanded the return of the besants to the bishop of Tiberias by the following Sunday; otherwise he would excommunicate all the Templars, in the West as well as in the East. The 2 brothers hurried to Acre and the magister appealed to the patriarch to settle the case and avoid scandal. But on the following Sunday the bishop of Sidon solemnly and publicly excommunicated the whole Order in the church of the Holy Cross in Tyre. The pope orders the patriarch to look into the matter and, if the bishop of Sidon is guilty, to suspend him from office until the papacy lifts the suspension and to absolve the Knights Templar.

text: Oct. 1. Sis. King Leon I of Cilician Armenia assures Pope Innocent III of his devotion. He reports that the vexillum sancti Petri sent by the pope has arrived and will always be carried in his armies against enemies of the Cross. He is maintaining peace with the citizens of Antioch and the count of Tripoli, but he informs the pope that the count of Tripoli and the citizens of Antioch have sent messengers to Roconidinus [Rukn ad-Din Sulaiman of Konya] entering into an alliance against him. He has stationed himself on the borders of Antioch. He has committed the case of his nephew Rupinus to the papal legates, but asks for the archbishop of Mainz to be made judge in his cause. He is grateful to the pope for writing to the count of Tripoli. In July he led his army on campaign against the Muslims, who are divided among themselves, and asked the Knights Templar, whose possessions in his country are worth 20000 besants, to come to his aid. The Templars came to Antioch and Leon asked the magister to join with him and the patriarch of Antioch in sending messengers to the Holy See over the issue of Gaston, which the pope wanted him to surrender to the Knights Templar. Leon offered to hand over Gaston provided the Templars gave support to his nephew Rupinus and lodged him in that castle. He and Rupinus sought to become confratres and assist the Templars in recovering another of their castles called Trapesach, but the Templars refused. Leon assures the pope of his attachment to the Latin faith. He is sending to the pope as a representative his miles called Garnerius Teuton.

He with 100 milites spent the period from Martinmas to Pentecost on the marches of the land of Tripoli beween Castrum Album and Haman. Sephedinus with his whole army journeyed from Egypt, Jerusalem and Damascus to beyond the river Euphrates and came to an agreement with his nephew the lord of Aleppo. This threatens the Christian settlers, and peasants [agricolę] have deserted the Templars’ lands and casalia. Bad weather has ruined the crops. An earthquake on 20 May caused great destruction, knocking down a large part of Acre and killing countless people, although the Templar houses were saved. All the towers around Tyre except 3 and the walls; barbacans and houses are wrecked. Most of Tripoli is destroyed, as is the castle of Archados, the foundations of the castrum Arsum and most of the walls of Castrum Album, including the great tower, which the Templars believed to be unrivalled. The city of Tortosa and the Templar castle there were spared. A pestilence followed the earthquake. Philippus asks for the abbot’s prayers, reminding him how the Knights Templar grew from the Cistercian Order. The Templars in the East have received with pleasure frater Artaudus and frater Bernardus de Borth with their companions.
