With the agreement of Guido Ioppensium et Ascalonitanorum comes and Sibilla his sister, Baldwin, per dei gratiam in sancta civitate Ierusalem Latinorum rex sextus, records under seal that he confirms regie maiestatis auctoritate, his gift to comes Ioscelinus, his uncle and most beloved senescalcus, of Castellum Nouum, situated in the mountains of Acre, with its vineyards, olive groves, gardens, lands and villani, with the exception of the casale called Iazun, which the king retains. Baldwin gives Ioscelinus 2 annual rents of 500 besants each, drawn from the funda of Acre and the funda of Tyre respectively, to be paid according to the customs of the fundae of Acre and Tyre. Baldwin also confirms the gift of a feodum of 100 besants, drawn from the funda of Acre, and 4 carrucate terre in the territory of Caimont, which had been held by Iohannes Banerius and which Ioscelinus has given to his homo Garnerius Parisensis, who married the daughter of Iohannes Banerius, for the servicium of 1 serviens with 2 horses. Baldwin has made these gifts in exchange for castrum Sancti Helye, which the king had given earlier, Lubanum and Carrubia, which, with the hominium of Iohannes de Lumbres, ought to have reverted to Ioscelinus after the death of Maria, late queen of Jerusalem. Baldwin adds the gifts of Maronum, with its lordships and fiefs [tam in dominiis quam in feodis], and the hominium of Gaufredus Torti and of Sanctus Georgius and of all the land belonging to Sanctus Georgius. Ioscelinus will owe servicium to the king of 6 milites, over an above that owed by rear-vassals [exceptis feodatis]. This specifies that 5000 marks of silver are to be given to each of the military orders and that another 5000 marks are to be disbursed jointly by them in the defence of the kingdom of Jerusalem, unless Henry shall himself recall the money for his own use, along with the funds he had already sent to Palestine. In the general chapter of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Rogier/Rogerius serf des poures de Crist/servus pauperum Jhesu Christi promulgates statutes dealing with the duties of the conventual prior and local commanders, the provision of physicians, the treatment of male and female patients, the ward duties of the brothers and servants, and the provision of materials for the Hospital in Jerusalem by the European provinces and by officers in the Latin East. Of the latter, the bailli/baylivus of Antioch should send 2,000 canes/brachia of cotton for making bed coverlets, and the prior of Mont Pèlerin and the bailli/baylivus of Tiberias should each send 2 quintaus/quintalia of sugar for making lectuaries and medicines. An appendix, issued after frère/frater Rogier/Rogerius de Molinis maistre/magister and frater Bernardus prior had heard testimony, lists customary regulations for the treatment of patients, including children, for the duties of the frere corvoisier and the aumonier/elemosinarius, for prayers for benefactors and for alms-giving. comments: [173] Although strictly speaking the regulations can only be dated to the periods between the acquisition of Cole/Chole (shortly before Dec. 25 1180 – Sept. 10 1181) and Roger’s departure for Europe in June 1184, and between his return to the East in the spring of 1186 and his death on May 1 1187, the reference to a general chapter makes it certain that these were issued at the same time as the Hospitaller statutes of Mar. 14 1182. [174] The regulations should be supplemented by the evidence provided in an important treatise, written in the 1180s by a (possibly) German cleric, who had worked in the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in that period. His description of the Hospital includes references to: the admission of Muslims and Jews as well as Christians; the organization into wards and their staffing; doctors [theorici/phisici] and surgeons [cyrugici]; a mobile field hospital accompanying Christian armies; the treament, diet and feeding of patients; female wards; Hospitaller nuns; an orphanage; and nobles serving for a time out of charity.
