December 11. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to Archbishop [Hugh] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), relating that Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, papal legate, informed him that Pope I[nnocentius IV] had sent a letter to Master [Renaud] and the Templars allowing them to collect up to 10,000 silver marks anywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany from money spent for the redemption of crusading vows in support of the Holy Land and from testaments of the faithful in support of the Holy Land that do not name specific people or places, granting the Templars Archbishop [Henry] of Nazareth as conservator in this matter. On the pretext of this indulgence, the master and brothers collected such redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem while the see of Jerusalem was vacant. But because, as the patriarch asserted, his predecessors had long been accustomed to receiving such payments and bequests in the kingdom when no papal legate a latere was in the area, the pope sent a letter stating that no indulgence conceded or to be conceded to the Templars or brothers of any other orders or even secular clerics was to prejudice in any way the patriarch’s receiving these payments and bequests in that kingdom. So the pope is sending a letter to the archbishop of Nazareth ordering him not to have these payments made to the master and brothers of the Temple. If the archbishop of Nazareth does not carry out his mandate, the pope orders the archbishop of Nicosia to force him to do so, notwithstanding any papal indulgence or counciliar decision exempting him from interdict, suspension, or excommunication.
