Pope Alexander IV writes to Queen [Placentia] of Cyprus, relating that Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis) explained to him that at one time a dispute arose between the late King H[enry], his mother [Alix], and the knights of the kingdom, on the one side, and the churches of the kingdom, on the other, over certain tithes and other issues, and that eventually the parties made a pact that the king swore to observe without violation, to have his men observe it, and to expel heretics from the kingdom. Although the archbishop asked her many times, however, the queen refuses to swear to defend him and his church as she should. The pope thus asks the queen to do what she is held to do. Otherwise she should know that the pope will not fail to show justice on these matters to the archbishop and the churches.
