Pope Innocent IV writes to the [cardinal-]bishop of Tusculum (Frascati) and papal legate [Eudes de Châteauroux], relating that the petition of the master and brothers of the house of St Lazarus of Jerusalem claimed that in their house by an ancient and approved custom observed so far a leper knight who is a brother of the house is taken as its master, but because almost all the leper knights of the house have been killed by the ‘enemies of faith’, this custom cannot properly be observed. The pope grants their request to elect as master from now on a healthy knight from the brothers of the house, notwithstanding the custom.
