. January 25. Perugia. Pope Innocent IV writes to Archbishop [Henry], Archdeacon G (William?), Prior [Peter] and the chapter of Nazareth, relating that he was told on their behalf that for the honour of their church and the increase in divine worship they unanimously and harmoniously established that from now on there shall be a prior in the church; that a chapter of only six canons following the rule of St Augustine shall live together and serve in the church (in which no number of canons following that rule was established before); that the canons shall eat in one refectory and sleep in the same dormitory along with the prior; that the casal called Ilut (Aylot) of the church of Nazareth shall be assigned to the prior and canons with certain revenues in wheat, barley, wine, oil, money and some other things in common with the archdeaconate of that church, which has been newly created; that nevertheless it is expressed in these statutes that a secular cleric will always be taken for the archdeaconate; and some other healthy and honest statutes, as contained in the letter drawn up for this, which the pope inserts verbatim (see RRR 2834, September 1251). Responding to their entreaties, the pope ratifies the statutes, confirms them on apostolic authority and strengthens them with this letter, threatening all in case of violation.
