Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and the brothers of the Hospital of Jerusalem, relating that he was told on their behalf that, although from old times there were many different seals in their order according to the diverse provinces, so that they do not change even if the preceptors or priors in those provinces change, nevertheless some are calling this into doubt because the names of the preceptors or priors of the provinces are not on the seals. Responding to their entreaties, since it seems rather difficult to make new seals every time the preceptors or priors change in the provinces, the pope establishes that the traditional seals, as long as they are the true and old seals of the provinces, should from now on have firm and undoubted faith in all their and their provinces’ court cases, contracts and business, although they do not contain the names of the preceptors or priors.
