In view of the hostile Muslim incursions and the disputes with the Muslim peasantry which mean it is not proving possible to maintain control of their estates, Henry archbishop of Nazareth and his chapter lease four casalia for a period of 50 years to the Hospitallers in the person of the master Hugh Revel. The four are in the place named Batuf: Roma, Rometta, Caphrahusepth and Cana Galilaea. The rent is 2,000 Saracen besants annually payable in two instalments at the end of March and the end of October. In time of war if there are 170 aratra the Hospitallers are to pay the full amount, but if there are between 100 and 170 aratra they are to pay proportionately less and if there are less than 100 aratra they should pay half. Guillelmus, archdeacon of Nazareth and syndic of the archbishop and chapter swears on the gospels to uphold this agreement. The document is sealed with the archbishop’s lead seal and the chapter’s wax seal with the promise that when the chapter has a lead seal it will be affixed.
