November 22. Viterbo. Pope Alexander IV writes to the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Lepers of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, wishing to lighten the suffering of their miserable condition. The pope has decided to allow them to receive up to 200 silver marks from money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways – as long as the those to whom the money must be restored cannot be found at all – and from earlier redemptions of crusading vows done on the authority of diocesans, except for that of Jerusalem, if they have not received a similar grace from the pope. If they leave, return, or give any of the 200 marks to those from whom they have received it, that returned money cannot serve for their liberation and they are not at all absolved with respect to that.
