June 22. Viterbo. Pope Alexander IV writes to Archbishop [Hugo] of Nicosia (Nicosiensis), relating that, since many clerics of his city and diocese have been struck with the canonical sentence for laying violent hands on secular clerics, out of concern for the spiritual health of his subjects, the archbishop asked the pope to grant him license to absolve them. The pope thereby grants Hugo license to absolve twenty of them, according to the form of the Church, after they have made fitting satisfaction to the sufferers for their injuries, as long as their infractions are not serious enough to merit the clerics being sent to the Apostolic See, provided that the expenses they would have incurred for a journey to, stay at, and return from the Apostolic See are applied to the aid of the Holy Land.
