April 28. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch [Jacques Pantaléon of Jerusalem], papal legate, and Archbishop [Gilles de Saumur] of Tyre, relating that he has heard that some of the faithful of the Kingdom of Jerusalem have left some of their goods in their last wills solely for the construction of the walls of the cities of Jerusalem and Ascalon (Ascholona) and of certain other places in the Holy Land. Because it is not hoped at present that these cities and places will be recovered, and it is feared that with time or even the death of those who hold these bequests they will be lost, and because the Holy Land, it is asserted, is in no little danger from invasion by the Mongols (Tartari), the pope orders the addressees to have those bequests handed over to them, forcing those who hold them with ecclesiastical censure, if necessary, after a warning, appeal put aside, so that the addressees spend the money for the fortification of cities and castles and for the defence of the Holy Land as they deem expedient.
