Pope Alexander IV writes to Patriarch J[acobus Pantaléon] of Jerusalem, relating that at one time the late Pope I[nnocentius IV] granted the master and brothers of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem that they could received everywhere outside the Kingdom of Germany up to 10,000 silver marks from money spent in redemption of crusading vows in support of the Holy Land; from money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways that the faithful order to be restored in their last will or are ready to do so while they are living, even if they are healthy, as long as those to whom the money must be restored cannot be found at all; and from testaments of the faithful with bequests to the Holy Land without expressing specific places or persons, assigning them certain executors for this. Afterward, however, the present pope, before the master and brothers, as they claimed, received that amount, ordered that the addressee receive this money from redemptions and bequests in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but in order to avoid trouble between the patriarch and the Templars, in answer to the patriarch's prayers the pope granted that the Templars could receive this money in the Kingdom of Germany and everywhere else outside the Kingdom of Jerusalem. But because, as the patriarch asserts, the Templars are prepared to cede to the patriarch the money gained via usury, robbery, or other evil ways, of which they have not yet received anything in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the pope grants that the patriarch can receive this money as well, considering the patriarch's fear of the coming of the Mongols (Tartari ) and his expenses in defending his church and subjects and the Holy Land while he is in exile from his church with tenuous incomes. If he leaves, restores, or gives anything to the people from whom he received this money, however, they shall not be absolved for that amount at all.
