January 17. Lateran. Pope Alexander IV writes to the prior of St Eligius (Saint-Éloi) Parisiensis and the dean of St Martin of Tours (Turonensis), relating that it was proposed before him on behalf of Count Alfonsus Eu (Augi), chamberlain of the Kingdom of France, the son of the late King Johannes [of Brienne] of Jerusalem, that the late Pope Innocentius [IV] granted that he be assigned up to 6,000 livres tournois from redemptions of crusading vows and from imprecise bequests and other money directed to support of the Holy Land for any reason in the provinces Rouen (Rothomagensis) and Tours (Turonensis), to be collected, deposited in safe places, and afterwards assigned to him or his procurators by the abbots de Neafla Vetreri (Neauple-le-Vieux) of the diocese Carnotensis (Chartres) and Eu (Auri) of the diocese Rouen (Rothomagensis). This was on account of the count's vow to devote two years to the cause of the Holy Land, going to great expense and putting him in serious debt. When the pope rose to his position, he wrote to the same abbots ordering them, if it is so and the count had not yet received the money, to follow his predecessor's instructions. Thus the count humbly requested that, since he still has not received all the funds, the pope provide for him. Responding to his requests the pope orders the addressees to collect and have the money assigned to the count, minus what the count is known to have received, according to his predecessor's letter.
