Following mediation by good men, Hugh, archbishop of Nicosia (Hugo Nicosiensis archiepiscopus), on behalf of his church, and Brother William of Chastel Neuf (frater Guillelmus de Castro Novo) magister sancte domus Hospitalis sancti Iohannis Ierlimitani and his convent reach an agreement, under both their seals, on the tithes owed by the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem for its lands in the city and diocese of Nicosia, and on certain other issues that have arisen between them. The preceptor and brothers of the house of the Hospital of St John in Nicosia will pay the archbishop and church of Nicosia 300 white besants a year for the tithes, payable at Nicosia on 1 September. The preceptor and brothers will also pay the archbishop and church 1 marcha argenti, payable each year in Nicosia on 1 September, for the quarter of goods of the dead. In return the archbishop and church of Nicosia will allow the bodies of the dead to be brought to the cemetery and church of the Hospital of St John in Nicosia and to be buried there. Bodies will not have to be taken to the mother church first unless an individual has expressed a wish to be taken there. The brothers of the Hospital will have no rights of ecclesiastical jurisdiction over their men (homines), who will be subject to the archbishop and church of Nicosia, saving the Hospital’s privileges. Children who die may be buried with the Hospital if this is the custom in the city; otherwise they should be buried by the church of Nicosia. The preceptor, brothers and sisters (mulieres familiares) of the house of the Hospital in Nicosia are to be subject to interdicts and sentences of excommunication and suspension delivered by the archbishop, saving the Hospital’s privileges.
