April 11. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to King [Alphonse X] of Castile, describing the sorry state of the Holy Land at length in emotional but vague terms, except he mentions the incursions of the Khwarazmians (Coresmini ), Turkomen (Turquemani), and Saracens (Sarraceni). The situation is extremely precarious, according to the prelates, nobles, and masters of the religious houses, unless help arrives. Thus the pope implores the king to send military assistance, for reverence of God, his salvation, and the honour of the Christian name, and to induce others to do the same, arranging with them a fitting time for this help to reach the Holy Land.
