January 21. Naples. Pope Alexander IV writes to the chapter of Acre (Acconenses), relating that, when their church lacked a pastor, they summoned those who should and could come on the assigned day and elected canonically Florentius, then canon of Laon (Laudinensis), as their bishop. With the chapter’s nuncios sent for this purpose, Florentius came to the Apostolic See and the nuncios asked the previous Pope I[nnocent IV] to confirm the election, which he did in order to avoid a long vacancy. Afterwards the present pope ordered that Florentius be consecrated. The pope therefore orders the chapter to welcome, obey, and revere Florentius as their bishop. The pope sends similar letters to the clergy and to the people of the city and diocese of Acre (Acconenses).
