Pope Innocent IV writes to the master and brothers of the house of the knighthood of the Temple of Jerusalem, relating that their petition claimed that, at one time, the pope wrote to the [cardinal-]bishop of Tusculum (Frascati) and papal legate [Eudes de Châteauroux] concerning a sum of money that the late Patriarch G[erold de Lausanne] had deposited with the addressees while alive. The pope ordered the legate to assign one third to the patriarch of Jerusalem [Robert de Nantes], G[erold]’s successor, and, on the advice of King [Louis IX] of France and the same patriarch, to convert the other two thirds to the support of the Holy Land. Because the addressees claim to be under crushing debt, however, they asked the pope to supply some relief. The pope grants that for two years they cannot be forced to pay the shares of the money that concern the legate and the patriarch [of Jerusalem], but they shall pay to the patriarch of Antioch, [Opizo Fieschi] without difficulty or delay the third that the pope established for him in another mandate, notwithstanding the fact that the addresses promised to pay fixed portions to the legate and patriarch of Jerusalem.
