Pope Innocent IV writes to the patriarch of Jerusalem (Robert de Nantes) and the bishop of Lydda, relating that he was informed on behalf of Brother Hugues de Nissun, relative of the late master of the Temple G[uillaume], that when at one time the pope ordered the patriarch to confer on him the episcopacy of Sebaste, in the province of Caesarea, which under Saracen occupation for more than 20 years was said to have been vacant for a long time, the patriarch did not proceed because the [arch]bishop of Caesarea had de facto appointed the absent dean of Caesarea to the see of Sebaste on his own authority, although he could not de iure and for a long time after the appointment the dean was not found to have assented, as is said. The pope wishes the grace that he initiated come into effect, so he orders the patriarch to proceed without difficulty with the appointment of Brother H[ugues] to the episcopacy of Sebaste according to the pope’s earlier letter, notwithstanding the appointment of the dean or the general revocation of appointments of bishops or abbots that the pope recently ordered.
