Henry, by the grace of God king of Cyprus (par la grace de Dex rei de Chypre) et seignor del reaume de Jerusalem, licences under the seal of Brother William of Chastel Neuf (frere Guillaume de Chasteel Neuf), master of the Order of the Hospital of St John (maistre de la sainte maison de l’Ospital de Saint Johan), to construct 2 gates for the profit of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem [at either end of] the street (rue) under the Order’s vote. The street runs between on one side l’ospital des malades and the church of St John, and on the other the brothers’ grant maneir. The brothers can build one of the gates towards the place where one enters the rue des Geneveis and the other towards the bathhouse (bains) which is called St John and where on enters the rue des Provensaus. The master (maistre) and brothers of the Hospital of St John will hold the gates and their keys, keeping them open during daytime, so that the rue under the vote and the gate before the bathhouse of St John will be for public use (seit comune a totes gens), going and coming, entering and leaving. During the night-time the brothers of the Hospital will close the gates and will have custody of the keys to them, so that no one, not even the king, may enter the rue.
