. December 22. Perugia. Pope Innocent IV* writes to the archbishop of Nicosia (Ugo da Fagiano), responding to his prayers by granting him the faculty of absolving men of Cyprus who lay violent hands on clerics, since they are not able to come to the Apostolic See because of the difficulty and distance of the journey. He must first receive from them the oath according to the form of the Church and they must show fitting satisfaction to the sufferers for their injury – as long as the injury is not serious or the crime excessive, for example attempted against a bishop or abbot or resulting in death or loss or disabling of limbs.
