Jun. 4. Viterbo. Pope Innocent III writes to King Leon of Cilician Armenia, deploring the dispute between Leon, his nephew and the count of Tripoli and the resulting danger to Antioch. He has received letters from Leon and his emissaries, the archbishop-elect of Tarsus and a brother of the Hospital of St Mary of the Germans, but complains of Leon’s obduracy in submitting to judgement on the matter and his use of force. Innocent has asked the count of Tripoli to surrender the citadel of Antioch to Patriarch Peter of Antioch, whom the Knights Templar and the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem have promised to assist. Innocent exhorts Leon to observe a truce with the count of Tripoli and to return the castle of Gaston, which Leon holds unjustly, to the Knights Templar.
