*Spring. Letters despatched to Rome wrongly report a German triumph in the Holy Land. They are followed by others that inform the pope that when the German [crusaders] reached Acre, they recovered the castle at Beirut, which was undefended. The Sarraceni had attacked and taken Jaffa, killing thousands of Christians. The Germans, hearing rumours of the death of the western emperor, reembarked, leaving the Christian settlers in peril from the Sarraceni. On Aug. 15, therefore, Pope Innocent III issues the letter Post miserabile, proclaiming a new crusade.
