text: Jul. 29. Lateran. Pope Paschal II confirms Giraldus Montis Thabor archiepiscopus in his metropolitan rights over all Galilee and Tiberias. He grants him the right to wear the pallium, and specifies the feasts and occasions on which it should be worn. He takes the abbey of Mt Tabor under papal protection. He confirms the abbey’s possessions granted by Godfrey of Bouillon and his successor King Baldwin I. He lists the casalia that ought to belong to the abbey: Boria ad pedem Montis Thabor; Damia; Saronia; Cafarseth/Capharsech; Lubia; Sysara/Sisara; Casta; Capharkemen/Capharkeme; Messa; Meschia; Mangana; Capharmaza; Caphartamara/Cafartamara; Endor; Malufh/Maluph; Cara; Nurith; Sulem; Elfule; Eumesara; Naim; Erbeth/Irbeth; Caimun/Cannun; Capharsuma in the territory of Acre; Desurchain in the territory of Tyre; Alme ad turonem Sapheth; Alme; Neeme in terra Belinas; in terra Sueth: Auara, Zaar, Elleeram, Betaras, Arthe, Taletap, Capharsalia; in terra de Grosso villano: Aingene, Seecip, Eusenia, Sesia; Elgor; Zepheria in terra Auram Ayn; in terra de Bettaniᶒ/Bethanie, Zera, Alcotaim/Alcotain, Menan, Hecdix. The abbey has parochial rights in Boria villa and the other parishes that belong to it. The monks can levy tithes on those casalia belonging to the abbey that are held by Christian milites.

text: Jun 19. Lateran. At the request of the abbot and monks of the abbey of St Mary of the Latins in Jerusalem, which was a hospice serving Latins [Latini], Italians and Lombards when Jerusalem was occupied by the Muslims [Sarracenorum Turcorumque temporibus], Pope Paschal II takes them under papal protection. He confirms their Cassinese Benedictine customs and their use of Roman psalmody. He forbids anyone to enter the abbey without the monks’ licence, other than the patriarch of Jerusalem. The abbot’s election will be according to the Benedictine Rule and no Italian is to be forced on the community. The ordination of an abbot is to be the prerogative of the patriarch of Jerusalem if the elect finds travelling to Rome for consecration difficult. No tithes are to be owed on harvests produced by the monks’ own labour or on oblations or revenues granted to the community. The abbey’s cemetery, and the cemeteries attached to its dependent churches, are to be available to those who wish burial, provided they are not excommunicates. Paschal confirms the abbey in its churches and possessions. The abbots may enjoy privileges granted by them by the churches of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Papal protection of St Mary has been recognized by the patriarch of Jerusalem.

text: Jan. 2. Benevento. Pope Paschal II confirms for Hvgo abbas and the abbey of St Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat all the gifts made by Godfrey [dux] and Baldwin [Ierosolimitanus rex] and others, and whatever the abbey will receive through the concessions of pontiffs, the liberality of princes and the oblations of the faithful. It will pay no tithes on the products of its own labour. It is free of episcopal procurations in Jerusalem. It can enjoy revenues from infidel peasants [rustici infideles]. Anyone can be buried in its cemetery. It can receive alms on behalf of those who die. It can enjoy parochial rights in its parishes. It can have relations with excommunicates. It is to be secure in its possesions and rights, saving its canonical subjection to the Church of Jerusalem.
